Apple Forced to Allow External Payment Links in Apps After Major US Court Ruling

US court orders Apple to let developers add external payment links in apps; no more Apple commission on outside purchases, impacting App Store rules and developer earnings.

A US federal court has ordered Apple to change its App Store rules, forcing the tech giant to let app developers add external payment links in their iOS apps. This means developers can now direct users to pay on their own websites, completely bypassing Apple’s in-app payment system and the hefty commission that came with it.

The decision comes after a long legal battle between Apple and Epic Games. The court found that Apple had violated an earlier injunction by making it difficult for developers to use external payments and by still charging a 27% commission on those transactions. The judge also criticized Apple for using “scare screens” that discouraged users from clicking external links.

With the new rules, developers in the US can freely add buttons and links in their apps for external payments. Apple is now banned from charging any fee or commission on purchases made outside the App Store. Developers can also show pricing, subscription options, and promotions directly in their apps.

This is a big win for companies like Epic Games and Spotify. Epic Games plans to bring Fortnite back to iOS with its own payment system. Spotify has already submitted an app update so users can choose from multiple payment options and see clear subscription prices.

For users, this change means more payment choices and a smoother buying experience. There will be no more confusing warnings or extra steps when using external payment links.

Apple says it will comply with the court’s order but plans to appeal the decision. For now, US developers can keep 100% of the revenue from external purchases, giving them more freedom and potentially lower prices for users.
