Google One, has just crossed 150 million subscribers globally. This is a big jump, up by 50% since February 2024, when it had 100 million users. The service, which started in 2018, offers cloud storage and cool AI tools, making it a hit with users.
This growth is massive for Alphabet, Google’s parent company, as it looks to earn more from subscriptions and reduce its dependence on ads, which make up over 75% of its $350 billion revenue in 2024.
AI Features Drive Growth
What’s behind this surge? A shiny new $19.99 per month AI Premium Plan launched in February 2024. This plan gives access to advanced AI tools like Gemini Advanced, helping with tasks in Gmail, Docs, and more. Millions have signed up for this tier alone, says Shimrit Ben-Yair, Google Vice President.
For those who just need storage, cheaper plans start at $1.99/month for 100 GB. But the AI plan, which also offers 2 TB storage and extras like VPN, steals the show.
Why This Matters for Google?
Google is at a turning point. With AI chatbots like ChatGPT and its own Gemini shaking up how we search online, Google’s traditional search business faces challenges. Even Apple’s Safari browser saw fewer searches due to AI tools, causing a $150 billion drop in Alphabet’s market value recently.
By pushing subscriptions, Google finds new ways to make money. CEO Sundar Pichai hinted at focusing on this model in 2025, much like they’ve done with YouTube.
What’s Next for Users?
If you’re in India or elsewhere, Google One plans are available with storage from 100 GB to 30 TB.
The AI features could be a game-changer for students, professionals, or anyone wanting smarter tools. Pricing and availability might vary, so keep an eye on Google’s local offers updates.
