GTA 6 Official Release Delayed to May 2026, Rockstar Apologizes

Rockstar Games confirms Grand Theft Auto VI will now launch on May 26, 2026, moving from its earlier fall 2025 window, citing the need for extra development time.

Updated:

Rockstar Games has officially pushed back the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) to May 26, 2026.

The game was previously expected to arrive in the second half of 2025, making this a significant delay for fans who have already waited over a decade since the last main installment.

In a heartfelt message, Rockstar apologized to fans, saying, “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game“. The studio explained that the extra time is needed to “deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve”.

GTA 6 is set to return players to a modern-day Vice City, inspired by Miami, and will introduce Lucia, the series’ first female protagonist. The game’s story is rumoured to follow a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style duo, Lucia and Jason, adding a fresh twist to the franchise.

The delay has disappointed many, but experts say it could benefit the industry, allowing other major titles to avoid direct competition with GTA 6’s massive launch.

Rockstar has not yet announced pricing or confirmed which platforms will get the game first, though PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are expected to lead, with a PC version likely arriving later.

Despite the setback, anticipation remains sky-high. The first GTA 6 trailer broke records with over 250 million views, and fans are eager for more updates as the new release date approaches.
