HMD is set to enter the smartwatch market with two new devices that could change how we think about wearable technology. The company plans to launch the HMD Rubber 1 and HMD Rubber 1S smartwatches, both running Wear OS and featuring unique camera capabilities.
According to a leak from @smashx_60, these devices represent HMD’s first venture into the smartwatch space. The leak suggests these watches might target the children’s market, especially given HMD’s recent partnership with Xplora, a company known for making kids’ smartwatches.
HMD Rubber 1: Premium Features
The HMD Rubber 1 comes packed with impressive specifications. It features a 1.85-inch OLED display and includes comprehensive health tracking with heart rate, SpO2, and accelerometer sensors.
The standout feature is the 2MP camera, making it potentially the first Wear OS smartwatch with camera functionality. The device offers 5ATM water resistance, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, and NFC connectivity.
Power comes from a 400mAh battery with both USB-C charging and Qi wireless charging support.
HMD Rubber 1S: Compact Alternative
The smaller HMD Rubber 1S features a 1.07-inch OLED display and a 290mAh battery. It includes the same health tracking sensors but lacks the camera and NFC features.
The device supports Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, and maintains the same 5ATM water resistance.
Market Positioning and Concerns
These smartwatches align with HMD’s Better Phone Project, which encourages children to engage more with the real world. However, the use of Wear OS raises concerns about battery life, a common issue with this platform.
The timing coincides with Google and Samsung’s recent announcement of Galaxy Watch for Kids, suggesting a growing focus on children’s wearable technology.
