Nintendo has officially announced the price of its much-awaited Switch 2 console-₹37,500 ($450)-for the US market, with preorders starting April 24 and launch June 5, 2025.
This marks a significant 50% increase over the original Switch’s launch price of $300, catching many fans and industry experts off guard.
According to a Forbes report, the price hike has led to disappointment among gamers, with many expressing concerns about affordability and value for money.
Reported by Moneycontrol, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged that the higher price could slow early adoption. He stated, “Nintendo Switch 2 is priced relatively high compared to Nintendo Switch, so we recognize that there are corresponding challenges to early adoption.” To encourage sales, Nintendo plans to bundle popular games like Mario Kart World with the console.
Why the Price Hike?
Industry analysts point to increased production costs, global tariffs, and the addition of new features as reasons for the price jump.
Despite the higher cost, Nintendo aims to sell 15 million units in the first year, banking on strong demand and exclusive titles. The Switch 2 will also support older Switch games, helping fans transition smoothly.
How Does It Compare?
The original Switch became one of Nintendo’s bestsellers, moving over 150 million units worldwide. However, the Switch 2’s price puts it closer to rivals like the PlayStation 5, which could make it a tougher sell for budget-conscious buyers.
Game prices are also rising, with Mario Kart World launching at $80, well above the previous $60–$70 standard.
Availability and Bundles
The Switch 2 will be available as a standalone console for $449.99 and in a bundle with Mario Kart World for $499.99. Accessories and other games will also see price increases, reflecting global market conditions.
