Unpaid Cloud Bills Force Google to Delete Byju’s $22 Billion Learning App

The edtech giant's flagship Android app vanished from Google Play Store, due to unpaid cloud infrastructure bills to Amazon Web Services.

Byju’s primary learning app has been removed from the Google Play Store after the company failed to pay Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud infrastructure support. The removal affects millions of Indian students who rely on the app for educational content across subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology for classes 4-12.

The delisting happened because Byju’s could not settle outstanding payments to AWS, which provides backend support for the app. The company is currently under insolvency proceedings managed by an Insolvency Resolution Professional who handles all payment-related issues.

App Functionality Severely Disrupted

Users with the app already installed reported inability to stream video content or access paid services. The company’s website has been reduced to a basic landing page, cutting off access for students across India. Even the Think & Learn Premium app, listed separately on the Play Store, has become largely unusable due to backend service disruptions.

The iOS version remains available on Apple’s App Store. Other Byju’s apps like Exam Prep and Premium Learning continue to be listed on the Google Play Store but with limited functionality.

From $22 Billion to Zero

Byju’s, once valued at $22 billion in 2022, now reportedly has a zero valuation. The company faces multiple legal challenges including a $18.5 million dispute with India’s cricket board over unpaid sponsorship dues. It also faces lawsuits from US lenders over a $1.2 billion loan.

Over 3,500 employees have been laid off as the company struggles with governance issues and investor disputes.

Despite the challenges, founder Byju Raveendran recently hinted at plans for “Byju’s 3.0” focusing on AI-powered learning tools and classroom outcomes.
